315,866 whereby male is 151,700 (49.6%) and female is 164,166 (50.4%) The projected population of the Municipality for 2007 stands at 284,171 people in the ratio of 49.9% female [141,902] and 51.1% The population growth rate is 4.7% per annum (Source: Population Census Report: Morogoro Region Age and Sex Distribution 2004).

The main factor which influences population growth is migration that increased from 3.7% in 1967 to 9.6% in 2002. The current rate of migration is estimated to be 14.5% [2008]

The increase is due to various reasons including:

• Natural population growth
• Increase of factories and industries
• Growth of trading centers,
• Expansion of agricultural activities,
• Improvement of infrastructure.
• Expansion of educational institutions especially primary and secondary schools.

Such development undertakings have attracted movement of people from various areas to Morogoro Municipality . In turn, these migrants have involved themselves in employment and self-employment in agriculture, business, petty trading and other town venture activities.
